Accounting is Done!

I only have to take one accounting class to graduate, and I just wrapped up the final tonight. Lucky for me, I had a great teacher that wasn’t interested in the technical details but rather focused on the high-level concepts. I actually considered switching to accounting in college, but at this point I’m never going to be a CPA so I’m not very interested in learning the cr/dr details. Instead, we focused on being able to understand financial statements, which is interesting as an investor!

Our professor was previously a higher-level exec at P&G and he had several CFO types come into class to talk, most of them had been pretty high-up in Fortune 500 companies. And they all said they hated it. We all think it would be awesome to make the kind of money that Jeff Immelt does (for example) but I doubt many are willing to work the hours he has/does to get there.

Lily, Repaired (we hope)

Lily had her 2nd surgery of the year, this time to take the spleen out to correct the HS and so far so good. We really wish we had known back in January what we know now, that way they could have taken the spleen and the gall bladder all at once.

In any event, we’re just hoping that this turns out to be the right long-term answer. Her hemoglobin numbers are in the low 7’s at best and possibly in the 6’s. She struggles with any kind of sustained physical activities, which was apparent in T-ball. The downside is she’s probably (up to the doctor) going to be on a daily antibiotic until she’s 18 and there’s just not a lot known yet, with certainty, about long-term life w/o a spleen.

In 3-4 months, once the transfusions wear off, we’re all going in for genetic testing to get more details on what exactly the defect is and where it came from. It’ll be important for the girls to know, if at some point in the future they decide to have children.

Here she is a little less than 24 hours after surgery.

This pic is too good to pass up. I had left for work and the girls were lounging around before starting their day.

Visiting the Harp Family

It’s been a couple years, at least, since I’ve seen my cousin Chris and his family. They bought a house in Lexington, and while he’s still in California preparing to head to Iraq, he came in for the weekend. They’re oldest, Gavin, is the most gracious 5 year old I’ve ever met. He was helping the girls get seated at lunch, asking them to play; just a great little guy.

I’m really disappointed that I didn’t get a pic of the whole Harp brood. Chris & Sabra are the only people on either side to have kids right now and it was really cool to see the girls hanging out with their cousins.
