Accounting is Done!

Wednesday, 24 June 2009 22:52 Written by Matt 0 Comments

I only have to take one accounting class to graduate, and I just wrapped up the final tonight. Lucky for me, I had a great teacher that wasn’t interested in the technical details but rather focused on the high-level concepts. I actually considered switching to accounting in college, but at this point I’m never going to be a CPA so I’m not very interested in learning the cr/dr details. Instead, we focused on being able to understand financial statements, which is interesting as an investor!

Our professor was previously a higher-level exec at P&G and he had several CFO types come into class to talk, most of them had been pretty high-up in Fortune 500 companies. And they all said they hated it. We all think it would be awesome to make the kind of money that Jeff Immelt does (for example) but I doubt many are willing to work the hours he has/does to get there.

We watched a great little video in Marketing the other day called Shift Happens, thought it was worth sharing.

Marketing Strategy

My first Saturday class! They opened this class up b/c the 3 nights were full. The class I originally signed up for had ~40 students, and while that’s not awful I’d much rather work in a smaller class where participation can be more robust.

Today was good, learned a variety of interesting things that I didn’t know yesterday.

Business Law

Classes started back up Monday night, and the first class is Business Law & Ethics. Reading the syllabus last week, I was actually scared of this class… The professor himself called it “the syllabus from hell” in class last night so my fear seems to have been justified.

But, I’m looking forward to the class all the same. Law is one area that, if I had 9 lives, I would pursue as a career. The class is shaping up to be a very participation-oriented class, with lots of discussions on ethics and business law so I believe it’s going to be a lot of fun. A lot of work too, but most things worth doing are.

Back to the grind

4 weeks of Marketing 101 started tonight, and it wasn’t as bad as expected. The topic is great, I find it interesting, but the 3+ hours in a classroom is still too much.
