Put In Bay, 2011!!

Tuesday, 05 July 2011 21:54 Written by Matt 0 Comments

Family vacation #3, and we made a repeat visit to Put In Bay and stayed about 4 doors down from where we were last year! Mom & Dad have been bugging us to go on an extended Harp family vacation for a couple years now, and thankfully we talked Mom out of Gatlinburg :)

We had a lot of fun, with lots of golf cart rides, ice cream and swimming! Mom & Dad took the kids one night so that we could do some bar hopping with Elaine & Kelli which was good. Cassie took the following weekend to recover, they all got to bed late and she was unable to function as a non-annoying person after only sleeping for 10 or so hours.

DIY Drainage Pipe Repair

I’ve noticed what look liked a snake hole in our garden for a couple years, and thought it was odd but never really investigated it. My father-in-law looked at it last summer and pointed out that it was actually a broken pipe. I didn’t know this, but the downspout empties into a PVC pipe that runs out to the street. At some point, that underground pipe was busted and water running through it was causing the ground to wash away and cause the “snake hole!”

I took this week off work to get some work done around the house, and this seemed like an easy enough task.

Step 1 - Dig a big hole around the pipe

Step 2 - Cut out the busted part

Step 3 - Bring a good helper!

Step 4 - Extract cut-out pipe & clean edges

Step 5 - Insert new pip, make sure to use PVC cement!

You might be wondering why I used a Y connector. Part of our back yard gets a bit soggy, and it’s been hard to keep grass growing in that area so I have plans to trench that out and put in some corrugated drainage pipe. So the plan is to connect that up with this drainage pipe so that everything runs out to the street! That project (the trenching) was actually #1 on my list for this week, but it’s been raining just about every day in April and hasn’t let up this week so no digging unfortunately.

Dad’s Camping Trip, 2010 Edition

Lily, Ava and I took another camping trip with friends, this past weekend, and had a blast! This year we did Hocking Hillls, and had a lot of fun. We hit Old Man’s Cave, which has some pretty steep drop-offs and then Ash Cave which was nice because the kids could just run around and play in the dirt.

We stayed at a KOA campground, and the Gem Mine was pretty fun! Bought a bucket of dirt, then all of the kids found their gems. For breakfast on Saturday, they had a “build your cereal” bar and Ava had some cocoa puffs with skittles; yum!!

Put In Bay Vacation

Family vacation #2, not as much fun as Disney but we still had a good time! We had to go up near Cleveland for a wedding in late July, so we figured we’d make a vacation out of it. We spent 2 days in Put In Bay, at the Put-in-Bay Resort and loved it! We had a huge, 3-story condo there and it was just the 5 of us.

We finished the trip at Cedar Point and it was so-so. We did a night pass, so only spent ~4 hours in the park. Park was fine, some of the new coasters look pretty cool (we were stuck on the tea cups!) but otherwise the experience sucked. The Hotel Breakers absolutely sucked! $250 for the night, and our room was very small with a 20″ piece-o-crap TV. The kids were zonked by 9:30, would have been nice to watch some TV…

Dad’s Camping Trip

Did a camping trip to Carter Caves with a couple of friends this weekend, had a lot of fun! First time I’ve been camping in (at least) a couple decades and the girls had never been. We did a cave tour, short hike to a natural bridge and did some late night dancing!

Girls did great on the drive up and back, Google did not do so well. The directions took me through gravel roads, a creek bed (!!) and (pretty sure) where they filmed Deliverance. I took 64/75 back.
