Dad’s Camping Trip

Sunday, 20 September 2009 20:30 Written by Matt 0 Comments

Did a camping trip to Carter Caves with a couple of friends this weekend, had a lot of fun! First time I’ve been camping in (at least) a couple decades and the girls had never been. We did a cave tour, short hike to a natural bridge and did some late night dancing!

Girls did great on the drive up and back, Google did not do so well. The directions took me through gravel roads, a creek bed (!!) and (pretty sure) where they filmed Deliverance. I took 64/75 back.

Disney Vacation at Vero Beach

Friday, 15 May 2009 20:53 Written by Matt 0 Comments

We had our first family vacation this past week, and it was a blast! We drove down to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort for a week, with a 2 day stop at Disney World in Orlando. A really nice place, right on the beach with a largish pool and plenty of kids-focused activities. The weather was awesome, no rain the entire week and not too horribly hot although the sun is dangerous as I found out with a wicked burn on the second day.

The girls were a little nervous in the ocean and the pool, we definitely have to get them into swim lessons this summer. Of course, they loved Disney World. Really two completely different types of vacations. The beach was very relaxed while Disney was much more hectic.

It’s Getting Insane…

Wednesday, 30 July 2008 22:05 Written by Matt 0 Comments

Delta is doubling most fees on checked bags. I especially like the part where you can be triple-charged; extra bag fee + overweight fee + oversize fee. You’re looking at a $315 charge for that bag, which is nuts!

Banks, who collect well in excess of $15B annually in fees, have proven that customers are willing to pay them. It seems like the airline industry is taking the same approach, which only seems sensible given our willingness to be nickle-and-dimed to death. My only question is why it took them so long to do it? The problem for airlines might be that air travel is a luxury that people can easily forgo. A second problem is that business travelers are a large segment for them and any business traveler worth their salt never checks bags. I doubt they’ll hurt demand, and I doubt they’ll go back down when oil price finally breaks.

Just one more headache for travelers, better weigh & measure your bags. But don’t take too many either…
